So my friend’s daughter just had her 1st baby and is experiencing what all us breastfeeding moms know alllll about. Sore nipples.
Yep I said it, and you know it’s true. The first couple of days – weeks when our sweet angel newborn clamps dowm, just hold your breath and let them latch. I can totally be rough. Don’t think your alone mama, all us breastfeeding alumni know the real truth.
So this morning I whipped up a batch of some tried-an-true sore-nipple cream. Stop fighting to melt the tube of stuff they give you at the hospital…or your midwife gives you at your home-birth (read about mine here) and make up this soft salve for yourself!
Post-baby, nipples need a little help.
And new mamas…push past these first few rough patches. It’s not all fun and games, I know. Your nipples will hurt and you’ll clench your teeth when they latch. And yes, it’s uncomfortable and hard. But know that YOU CAN DO IT! You’ll get over this hill and before you know it, your baby will be latching on and off without you even knowing it.
So slather the girls up with your sore-nipple salve. It will help.
Be sure your baby is getting a GOOD latch. That is essential! A bad latch will be excruciating and will seem to never get better. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Ask a veteran breastfeeding mama….she knows, or call up your lactation consultant or local Le Leche League.
My recipe has a special ingredient, TALLOW.
“tallow is very compatible with our cell biology, it is readily absorbed by the skin. Therefore, applying tallow balm does not result in a greasy look or feel. It is taken up by the skin as nourishment and softens the skin quickly. Furthermore, a little balm goes a very long way, unlike with most commercial lotions that contain a large amount of very expensive water. A tallow balm can be applied anywhere on the body, including feet, hands, face, and even lips, so there is no need for multiple skin care products, not even a separate lip balm, since tallow is perfect for every skin care need.” (WAPF source)
