It’s summer and it’s hot. We’ve also been getting lots of rain and that mix is mosquito heaven.
We joke here in South Alabama about the mosquitoes carrying off the kids.
Seriously….they can get bad. My girl likes to scratch too…and pick her scabs. So I HATE mosquito bites and momma is gonna do whatever it takes to get these little buggers off my kids.
Avoiding store-bought bug sprays is priority especially because many of them contain the toxic chemical DEET.
DEET is a hormone disrupting neruo-toxin, yep definitely not putting that on my kids. If you need more proof….I encourage you to read THIS.
Lot’s of people are already avoiding DEET and since they know that I am too, I am constantly encouraged to put Avon’s Skin So Soft on them.
It’s natural right!? WRONG.
Avon Skin So Soft Ingredients:
Homemade Mosquito Spray:
- 3 tablespoons of witch hazel or vodka (buy it here)
- 3 tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil or sweet almond oil (buy it here)
- 20 drops of each essential oil
lemon eucalyptus, basil, lemongrass and lavender (where to buy quality essential oils)
- glass spray bottle (where to buy)
- distilled water
Mix all ingredients in spray bottle and shake well. I noticed that it needs to be re-applied after 2-3 hours or sooner if sweating a lot.

I love the sound of your mosquito spray. A lot of sprays sold in the supermarket are full of toxins and horrible smells. I am definitely going to make yours. I am sure it smells awesome due to coconut oil 🙂

I have all of those, I’ll have to make up a batch!

I really need to try this! There is a park the girls love to play at but it is so buggy!

People love Skin So Soft because it keeps the bugs away but you’re so right — too many yucky chemicals. I was using another brand (commonly found in Babies R Us) until I realized it had GMO soybean oil. Your recipe looks fantastic!

Wow sounds great! Could have used that last week when we were in the mountains!
Rachel @ day2dayjoys says
We use a similar spray but will have to give yours a try! In the South there is no shortage of mosquito’s so this is great!

So do you simply add the essential oils to the mixture or do you need to dilute the essential oils first before adding them? I don’t know much about essential oils at all, but I keep reading that they need to be diluted somehow.
Toups Mom says
The oil, witch hazel and water in the recipe is what is diluting the essential oils.
Kristen says
How much of the distilled water do u use?
Toups Mom says
After the oils are added I fill the bottle with water.
